We are thrilled to receive an award from Upper Hutt Multicultural Council for our contribution to supporting multicultural communities in Upper Hutt.
The award ceremony was attended by Denise Clarkson, Libraries Manager, and Rhea Fohs, Senior Librarian, on 10 February 2024 and presented by Vanisa Dhiru, Communication and Information Commissioner, UNESCO.
For years, Libraries have promoted diversity and inclusivity in our collections, programmes and events aimed at celebrating and honouring the diverse cultures in Upper Hutt that enrich our community and foster cross-cultural dialogue.
"We are deeply humbled to receive this award, which reflects our commitment to promoting inclusivity and diversity within our Upper Hutt community," said Denise. “At the heart of our mission is the belief that diversity is our strength, and we are dedicated to creating an inclusive space where all members of our community feel valued and respected. This award serves as a testament to the hard work and dedication of our staff, volunteers, and community partners who have helped make the Libraries a truly inclusive and welcoming place for all."
Over the years, the Libraries have supported the community with Chinese New Year celebrations, Multicultural Week and Race Relations Day events. Our Outreach team has also gone along to events out in the community with the most recent being Wallaceville Open Day which was held on 2 March 2024.
In addition to hosting our own multicultural events, we have also played a vital role in supporting the work of Upper Hutt Multicultural Council and other community organisations by offering a free space for community programmes, workshops and events.
We extend our heartfelt gratitude to Upper Hutt Multicultural Council for this honour and look forward to celebrating Multicultural Week this week at Upper Hutt Libraries with our joint offering of exciting events.
Multicultural Week runs from 18 March to 24 March.
