Friday Fables is a fortnightly programme run in the Rotary Lounge at the library. The programme is designed for adults with disabilities and sees them get together to share stories, poems and songs. The atmosphere is one of warmth and laughter, every member is full of smiles and eager to participate.
The programme was established back in 2011 by Helen Thomas, our lovely Host Team Leader, and has been running successfully every fortnight since. This interactive group, not only provides a fun environment, it also provides a forum for companionship for disabled adults. It is open to anyone with any disability and the main objective is for participants to be offered a programme tailored to meet their needs and give them a sense of belonging to the library. The success of Friday Fables has seen other New Zealand libraries show interest in the model and look at getting similar programmes up and running in their own libraries.
The library is an ideal setting for this programme and strives to engage all attendees regardless of their personal challenges. These types of programmes are truly rewarding for library staff and the community. People in the library observing the sessions are also full of smiles as the happiness of the group is really quite contagious. Friday Fables welcomes any new members with disabilities to join. This month the programme is running on the 3rd, 17th &31st of July at 10:30am.
