Requests can be placed on any item whether on loan or available. A request books the item for you, and you can specify at which location (Central, Pinehaven or the Mobile) you would like to pick the item up. Anyone with a current library card can make a request. Requests can be made in the library, or you can make an online request on our catalogue.
There is a charge of $1.00 per item for this service if the item is from the Adults collection. Requests for items from the Children’s or Teen’s collections are free.
There is no limit to the number of books that you can request.
You will need:
- Your library card and PIN/password if you are using the catalogue
- Information like the title and author of the item you wish to reserve
- To know which branch you want to pick the item up from
You will be contacted by email, text or mail when the item is ready for you and you then pick it up from the location where you requested to pick the item up from. Items are on hold for 10 days before being returned to circulation.
We cannot guarantee when the item will be available because we are reliant on the item being returned to the Library. We do our best to deliver requested items as soon as possible.
If the Library does not have an item, you may place an Interloan request. An Interloan is a request for a library item that we don’t have but another library around New Zealand does. There is a charge of $8.00 for each item, payable when you pick up your request. The loan time is four weeks.
Anyone with a current Upper Hutt City Library card can access the Interloan system and the following items can be borrowed:
- music scores
- photocopies of articles (in accordance with the Copyright Act)
- some audio-visual material
- car manuals
The details needed to place an Interloan are:
- publication date
- for articles we also need the journal title and issue details (year, volume, pages)
- your library barcode number and contact details.
The time taken for an Interloan to arrive depends on the difficulty of the search for, and the availability of, the material at the holding libraries in New Zealand. It is advisable to plan ahead when requesting material, as there could be a delay of 3-4 weeks. You will be advised by email or mail when the Interloan has arrived.
The item will be waiting for you to collect at the location you choose, i.e. Central Library, Pinehaven, or on the Mobile library. Items are on hold for 10 days before being returned to their originating library.

Suggest a title for our collection
We also welcome suggestions from our members to buy new material. The Library may not necessarily purchase suggested items but we will inform you if we do.
