Monster's and Slime at the library
On Sunday the 16th of October, the library launched a new programme of science experiments, craft activities and board game competitions. These will be held every third Sunday of the month.
The first event was creating coloured slime, decorating monster shapes and making monster foam. As this was a messy exercise, we held the activity outside the library on the deck.
We began by making a paste of cornflour water and food colouring and combining. As part of the experiment, the children were encouraged to add more water or cornflour to see what happened as well as adding different food colourings to see what colours they could create. They really enjoyed mixing and mashing their hands in the slime.
Next, they began to make their foaming monsters. We gave them a container, which they added vinegar, a splash of dish washing liquid and then their choice of colour. One at a time, the children held their monster out and added baking soda. They loved watching it fizz, bubble and grow. It was also extremely exciting watching their foam pour over the top of their containers.
The next event in this series will be held at the Upper Hutt City Library on Sunday 20th of November from 2-3. This time we will be playing with clay and creating objects to take home.
